While fishing around events in San Francisco I came around this amazing food find, the SF Underground Market. It’s a market of ethnic vendors that prepare anything from homemade gluten free brownies to bacon wrapped mochi.
The event increased their visibility this year by starting at 2pm and lasting till 2am in the morning. Great jazz and blues music, it was one of the best SF events i’ve been to all year long. Learn more about these monthly food events at foragesf.com

Bennies From Heaven (Egg's Benedict)

I stumbled upon this place over the Memorial Day weekend and was astounded by it’s unique menu of all organic vegan-style foods. When you think Mexican normally organic doesn’t come to mind, but in this little San Francisco restaurant organic is the only word used to create the most delicious Mexican dishes around town. The restaurant, Gracias Madre, builds its reputation around providing only locally grown organic foods. Their vegetables are picked fresh daily from their organic farm in Pleasants Valley, only a few miles from their shop. Their mission? To create healthy human beings, strong communities, and a healthy planet.
If you’re looking for meat this isn’t your place. All traditional meat-filled Mexican dishes are replaced with vegetable mixes only. Dishes included are chile rellenos, tacos, and enchiladas. For your starter dish, make sure you get the guacamole and tortillas. Their tortillas are hand-made daily and include non-GMO heirloom corn. They are to die for! If you love them a lot you can take a batch home with you for only $5. I’d also recommend the cantaloupe juice. One taste and you would think you were eating cantaloupe straight off the rind. Not only is the food amazing but the interior decorating is as well. Old time glass bottles hold your water while raggedy-looking napkins give the feel you’re eating in rural Mexico. Be sure to check this place out next time your in Northern California. That’s it for now. See you in a few. Love ya!
Wow what a week! These last 10 days in Los Angeles were as busy as ever. On my birthday, the biggest part of last week, I not only attended my boyfriend’s college graduation but was also blessed to witness the birth of my friend’s first child, Kai. As packed as it was I still found time to visit one of my favorite frozen yogurt shops in the San Fernando Valley, Menchie’s!
Menchie’s, a nationwide franchised frozen yogurt shop, takes food creativity to a whole new level. The colorful and “oh so yummy” chain has over a dozen frozen yogurt flavors and over three-dozen types of toppings. Cost is measured by weight so adding as much or as little of a certain topping is nothing to fret about. Toppings range from strawberries to mochi to even hot fudge. By far my favorite topping would have to be their lychee fruit. Lychee is an unusually sweet fruit found in Asia, South Africa, and Mexico. I’ve found it to be the perfect garnish for many Asian cocktails and is now the tastiest addition to my Menchie’s frozen yogurt.
Not sure what to get at Menchies? Try my sweet concoction, a “SoCal Twist!” I get it every time!
- Fill a medium size Menchie cup half way with “Cake Batter” yogurt
- Add 3 spoonfuls of “Fruity Pebbles”
- Add 3 spoonfuls “Mochi”
- Add 2 spoonfuls “Lychee”
- Add 2 spoonfuls strawberries
- Sit down and enjoy!
